1999 and it is the end of days, the final run up to the apocalypse where the conflict between the dragons of Heaven and Hell reaches its fulfilment in the form of Kamui Shirō, who is believed to hold the key to the fate of the world. After an absence of several years Kamui returns to Tokyo, where super humans are gathering to take their sides, in the final fight to protect the ones he loves. It is his choice whether to join the The Dragons of Earth wiping out humanity, to start another world, or The Dragons of Heaven who wish to keep humanity safe and the world as it is...

So, we finally some to the end of X (2001) with its sixth and final DVD containing the last four episodes 21-24 - Current, Betrayal, Earth and Legend and, for a show which took so long in building up some head of steam, the ending does not take a sudden turn away from the introspective nature of the show.

In fact, although we do discover whether it is possible to avoid your fate, the show does it in such a way that I had to rewind to make sure that the show had come to an end. Now if you’ve enjoyed the talky side of the show this fits naturally into the overall tone, but I was hoping for something more dramatic, I was left with a feeling of "was that it then?" and yes it was. The show ends as quietly as it began.

On a brighter note, most of the story threads and character arcs are resolved by the final frame, so there should be only a few unanswered questions, and the CLAMP style of drawing still looks good once you get used to the odd elongation of the bodies.

In line with the previous releases the 4:3 picture is one of the best around. The show comes with an option for either an English 5.1 or Japanese 2.0 track; either is good though the subdued nature of the show mean that the 5.1 isn’t strictly necessary.

So the show bows out the same way it arrived, with a subdued but confident tone.
