Death – the ultimate earworm! Looking for rest and relaxation, the Doctor and Gabby have taken a trip to a sky city floating above the gas planet Wupatki – home to one of the most spectacular sensory experiences in the universe! But chaos ensues as the corrupted Shan’tee – conceptual beings from a different order of reality – prey on the human colonists and stir up a stampede that threatens to tear the worldwide bridgeweb apart! Can the Doctor find the counter melody that will bring peace back to Wupatki? And can Gabby stop her mind from being invaded by a sentient song?! Meanwhile, in deep space, an old face comes calling…!

There’s not a lot to say about this issue that I haven’t already covered in my review of the previous one. That’s not to say that this is a weak issue (far from it), but writer Nick Abadzis perhaps served up too many of his magical ingredients during the previous course of this two-part storyline, leaving us with few real surprises for this second helping. The bubble-like Bovodrines continue to wreak unwitting damage to the floating settlement in their panicked state, as in the previous issue. The monstrous Nocturnes continue to multiply, as before. Their contagion continues to spread, as revealed in the shocking climax to the last episode.

However, we do get to witness a previously unseen ability of the Shan’tee sound entity called Smokey when the Doctor disappears in his TARDIS to track down the source of the mysterious signal that is causing so much harm to the planet Wupatki.

As a whole, The Singer Not the Song has been an excellent tale, full of alien wonders, both beautiful and deadly.

Talking of which, there’s a surprise guest appearance on the final page – someone we knew would be returning at some point, but perhaps not quite so soon…
