Varèse Sarabande Records takes a look back at 1985, a historic year for film music with the release of 1985 At the Movies – featuring some of the most enduring themes from films including Witness (Maurice Jarre), Brazil (Michael Kamen), Legend (Jerry Goldmith), The Color Purple (Quincy Jones/arr. by John Williams), and Agnes of God (Georges Delerue)...

In June of this year (2015) Varèse Sarabande released a 6 disc CD collection Back in Time... 1985 at the Movies. For those that couldn't afford £65 (it's the best £65 you'll ever spend, believe me) they have released the first disc, which contains 16 tracks (1 hr, 09 min, 16 sec) of some of the most impressive scores from 1985.

For casual soundtrack fans who want a compilation of music from that year, they don't come much better than this. Composer David Newman delivers pieces that are near as possible to the original soundtracks - and I know the majority of these scores very well indeed. 1985 was probably the first year that I really started to collect scores from movies I'd seen. While I didn't (and still don't) own the original scores for some of the movies here, I know Alan Silvestri's Back to the Future score inside out. David Shire's music for Return to Oz still remains one of my all time favourite scores (even though the film is a bit naff). I'm also incredibly familiar with John Barry's music for Out of Africa and A View to a Kill. And Cocoon is still one of my favourite James Horner scores.

This is a wonderfully orchestrated album with some lovingly reproduced classic themes. Well worth adding to your collection, even if you own most of the originals. It's also given me a prod to try and pick up some of the old scores I don't already have in my collection.
