The Luke Skywalker Battle Simulation Helmet is based on Luke's Red Five helmet

For those who want authentic detailed replica helmets from the Star Wars universe, but don't have the budget to splash out on the EFX prop replicas, Hasbro's Black Series collection has gradually been releasing amazingly detailed props that don't break the bank.

Years ago I started to collect the Don Post Star Wars helmets (which in all fairness were not a lot cheaper than these Black Series ones), but I was always a little disappointed how they didn't look all that screen accurate - but they were the only really decent collectables available at an affordable price. So, when Hasbro announced they were going to start producing collectable helmets, but with a little bit of electronic gadgetry thrown in for good measure, I was pretty much ready to just give them my bank log in details and let them take whatever they wanted to ensure I got to own one.

I ended up waiting and reading online reviews to see what others thought before I went through the back catalogue, picking out the ones of interest - which were mainly those from the original trilogy.

One of the first ones I picked up was the Luke Skywalker Battle Simulation Helmet. This is based on Luke's Red Five helmet from the end of A New Hope and the Hoth battle from the opening of The Empire Strikes Back.

First thing you notice is how how large it is and how screen accurate it appears to be. There's wear and tear battle damage in the paint job which is incredibly well detailed. It comes with a flexible metal and plastic microphone (for show) and removable cushions that help pad the interior out so that it is very comfortable to wear and helps secure a snug fit. There's an optional chin strap which you can add if you're planning on wearing this as part of a costume - again this has been designed to look as screen accurate as possible.

The electronics play sounds from both the battle of Yavin and the battle on Hoth. You can chose which you want by flicking a switch on the inside of the helmet. Then, on the outside you can push a cleverly concealed button to run through a number of sounds including ship interiors, quotes from the movies and combat sounds. Whenever there's a laser firing sound or explosion, red and green lights inside the helmet flash. While it's not a feature I have much use for, it's pretty cool all the same - especially for cosplay. There are three speakers in the helmet the sound is really impressive when wearing it. It requires 3 x AAA batteries to power this feature.

What's great about this series is that it caters for both collectors who just want to display the helmet or for fans who want to wear it as part of a fancy dress / cosplay outfit.

For the price you really can't complain. It has the look and feel of an expensive authentic collectable but at a much cheaper cost.
