Jessie Sullivan is a paranormal detective who worked for Re.Surs Anomaly Enforcement Administration (RAEA) in Modern-City. On a cold evening, Detective Sullivan receives a message from the Superintendent, a longtime colleague. The message says that there has been a terrifying incident that occurred in Social District of Modern-City. This incident disrupted the work of a vital processing building of the Re.Surs (the perfect source of energy). This peculiar event will entail the discovery of an extremely dangerous criminal who wants to encroach, in the truest sense of the word, the precarious peace in Modern-City and throughout the Continent...

Set in the future, you play as one of three characters

Re.Surs is a 2D side-scrolling shooter game. Set in the future, you play as one of three characters, each with their unique abilities. Detective Jessie has a handy dash power, useful during combat. Helga is the only character who can also move vertically, useful for car chases, and Basil can control objects in his environment.

It’s a retro game and the design is heavily pixelated. Each of the characters is pixilated to the point that they do not really have much definition, let alone actual faces. The backgrounds are nicely detailed and there is a good emphasis on the lighting which really adds to the atmosphere of the piece. There are some puzzling elements to the game, but mostly you just kill things.

The balance between story and combat is nicely done

However, this decision to go for a retro pixilated look also means that it is next to impossible to work out which specific buttons do what, as they are also pixilated into near oblivion. In the heat of battle this can become a real issue.

On the plus side there is a good variety of opponents and reasonably difficult bosses to tackle. The game is very story driven, and the balance between story and combat is nicely done.

It’s not a huge game and a run through should take no more than four to five hours, but this is balanced against the fact that in this world of highly expensive games this is pitched around the pocket money level.
