An ancient evil has returned from beyond death and threatens the very existence of the realms. Will the champion of the Elder Gods have the power to defeat the threat borne of deception...?

Mortal Kombat: Unchained delivers a deep fighting game for PSP owners. With multiple fatalities per character, multi-tiered interactive backgrounds, extensive game modes, six new fighters, and a new endurance mode the latest addition to the range gives the fighting genre another kick in the pants.

The six new fighters, exclusive to the PSP release, include Kitana, Jax, Frost, Blaze, Goro and Shao Kahn. Different modes include a straight forward championships, chess, Konquest, and puzzle. All modes help to keep the game fresh and provide something of fun for everyone. It was a shame that the chess moves were not the same as regular chess, but then I suppose that would have alienated a lot of gamers who can't play chess.

If you're new to the franchise, or just want to learn how to fight properly on the PSP version, then the Konquest adventure game is the place to start - as this opens with an explanation of the main attack and defence moves and slowly guides your through combos etc. Sure, you can just jump into the main game, but you might find yourself being beaten to a pulp by the higher level characters - especially the huge Onaga boss.

Each of the characters comes equipped with three different fighting styles - which help to spice things up a little. To be honest though, for those who are just going to button mash there way through (not a good idea though as this is not that effective in this game) the two weaponless styles may seem a little similar. But, learn all three of your styles and you'll stand a better chance of defeating your opponent.

Unlocking the extra content also proves to be entertaining. From the main menu you can visit the huge "Krypt" where you can buy some interesting extras. Each grave has a different coloured icon on it (each colour denotes a type of currency) along with the amount of that currency you will need to open it. Play a few battles in the main game modes and you will be given some cash with which to unlock some of the extra content. And this is where the fun begins. There are hundreds of graves to be unlocked - a lot of which contain more money to allow you to open even more graves - and I spent ages unlocking as much content as possible. Extras include movies (including some great outtakes), production art; soundtrack music clips; new costumes; and pictures of some of the people behind the scenes.

It's gory, it's frantic and it's fun. What more could you want from a Mortal Kombat game?
