Take on the role of Spider-Man and one of his famed nemeses, Green Goblin, in an original storyline which builds upon their legendary comic book rivalry. Personalise your gaming experiences by choosing what abilities and powers to upgrade, such as Spider-Man's web manoeuvres or Green Goblin's fire attacks, as you fight to save or destroy New York...

Battle for New York allows you to play as both Green Goblin and Spider-Man as you progress through the levels. You start off as the Green Goblin as you rampage through the streets, beating up police officers who try to stop you, followed by a rampage through Peter Parker's school - knocking down supports and breaking test tubes. Then you can take on the role of Spider-Man as you rescue people from the school which you've just wrecked as the Green Goblin.

Both characters come with their own set of special moves - which can take a little getting used to. And on occasion (to straighten a collapsing pillar, or to lift a car to rescue a civilian, for example) you can use the stylus, or your finger, on the bottom screen. And from time to time you'll be given the ability to upgrade certain elements of your character - ensuring that you can use your strengths in future levels.

I have to admit that I had a lot more fun playing as the Green Goblin - there was something so satisfying about being able to smash buildings up and punch anyone who tried to stop me. But the Spider-Man segments are much more challenging.

The most notable thing about this game is the fantastic job the developers did of making full use of both screens on the DS for the comic book style linking segments. These not only look great, but the developers have spent some serious time making sure that the vocal acting is up to speed too. Add to this some great music, and you have a winning combination which plays well.

Of course the previous Spider-Man game for the DS, which set the benchmark, is Ultimate Spider-Man. And while Battle for New York doesn't quite reach the same standard, it gives it a run for its money.

On the negative side, while the game is good fun most determined gamers will be able to complete it over a weekend - which is a bit of a shame.
