Fourteen-year-old Will Burrows lives with his parents and younger sister Rebecca in London. He has little in common with any of them, except for a passion for digging, which he shares with his father, a museum curator and doctor of archaeology.
When his father suddenly disappears after a row with his mother, the police believe he has just gone away for a while to cool down. But Will is unconvinced, and decides to investigate with his best friend Chester. It's not long before the two boys find themselves deep underground, where they unearth a dark and terrifying secret...

Tunnels is a story written by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams and read by Jack Davenport (This Life, Coupling, Pirates of the Caribbean).

The story revolves around a young boy called Will Burrows who loves digging - a hobby he's obviously picked up from his father who is a professional archaeologist. And, when his father vanishes, Will employs the help of his friend Chester to look into his disappearance.

After dark, the two boys break into the museum where Dr Burrows worked and find his journal. In it, he talks about a strange group of pallid people; a bizarre glowing sphere; and a man named Martineau who is reputed to have built a network of underground tunnels, although there is now no evidence that they ever existed. Sure that his father has gone to find the tunnels, Will and Chester follow in his footsteps. Soon they find themselves deep underground, where they unearth a dark and terrifying secret - a secret which may cost them their lives.

Davenport does a splendid job of translating this adventure to CD. I'm generally not a fan of talking books, but this tale is pretty engrossing. As the market audience for this is undoubtedly teenagers, Davenport enthuses just the right amount of feeling into his reading, without making it look like he's trying too hard.

This is the perfect CD collection for your teenager to listen to in the car or whilst going to sleep at night.
