The time has come for the heart to harden, and two lovers must choose to stand one against the other or lead all to their destruction. Adoring eyes have now become the weapons of war. The Iga's elaborate deception has come to an end, their treacherous advantage lost. Hatred that has smouldered for generations drives history to repeat, as the call goes out for the past to be avenged. But as one lover turns to the light, the other chooses to look away. And what Oboro has given freely, Gennosuke has taken away. As the numbers fall the stakes rise ever higher, with fate the worst enemy of all. No mercy will be spared to the enemy...

Basilisk tells a story of star-crossed love set against the backdrop of a bloody conflict between two rival ninja clans. Based on the popular manga by Masaki Segawa, itself an adaptation of best-selling author Futaro Yamada's 1958 historical novel The Kouga Ninja Scrolls, and produced by Studio Gonzo (Speed Grapher; Samurai 7; Gantz; Burst Angel), Basilisk is a character-driven period piece packed with super-ninja combat action and plenty of graphic bloodshed.

Episodes on Volume 3 include:

Farewell: Gennosuke, along with two other members of the Kouga clan, are surrounded by Iga. As they slowly walk through the crowd, a handful of Iga attack. Gennosuke's special power is let loose causing the attacking Iga to kill each other. With Gennosuke's power now known, Tenzen calls forward one of his warriors who he thinks can defeat Gennosuke. However Oboro intervenes and allows Gennosuke to escape, much to the annoyance of the rest of the Iga clan.

Divine Mandate: This episode is basically a recap of what has already happened in the series to date - showing which characters are already dead and how they died.

On Their Own: Gennosuke issues a challenge to the Iga clan - telling them that if they attack the Kouga village they will destroyed. Never one to back down from a challenge, Tenzen sends some scouts out to locate the Kouga and end their lives.

Remembrance: After blinding Gennosuke, Saemon is in pursuit of Hotarubi - who cleverly misleads him by making him follow her butterflies.

Extras include Behind the Scenes of Basilisk (2 x 32 min featurettes that sees some of the Japanese voice actors being interviewed); textless opening and closing titles; and trailers.

Another interesting addition to the series - although you can probably skip Divine Mandate, unless your memory is that bad you can't remember what happened in the previous two volumes.
