The powerful and exhilarating third novel in Conn Iggulden’s No. 1 bestselling Conqueror series, following the life and adventures of the mighty Genghis Khan.

The fatherless boy, exiled from his tribe, whom readers have been following in Wolf of the Plains and Lords of the Bow, has grown into the great king, Genghis Khan. He has united the warring tribes and even taken his armies against the great cities of their oldest enemies. Now he finds trouble rising west of the Mongolian plains. His emissaries are mutilated or killed; his trading gestures rebuffed. So, dividing his armies, using his sons as generals of the various divisions, he sends them out simultaneously in many directions, ranging as far as modern Iran and Iraq.

As well as discovering new territories, exacting tribute from conquered peoples, laying waste the cities which resist, this policy is also a way of diffusing the rivalries between his sons and heirs and working out who should succeed the khan.

This, the third book in the Conqueror series, is once more an epic story. Genghis Khan is an exhilarating and heroic figure. The sense of his ambition and his power, the relationships with his wives, sons and trusted aides, the sweep of his conquests, is all brought together by a masterful storytelling. It is a compelling read. With each book, you are left, even more, longing for the next.

But Clay’s life is far from perfect - his relationship with Sam is a secret because she actually works for his overbearing mother and he is in desperate need of a heart transplant.

Jack Harper (Terrence Howard) is Clay’s friend and his cardiologist. Jack was there when Clay first had heart trouble and he helps Clay prepare for the surgery, which will occur as soon as the doctors can find a donor with Clay’s rare blood-type. Jack stresses to Clay that he must live everyday to the fullest, come clean to his mother and marry Sam without further ado. When he does, Lilith responds by offering Sam money to stay out of their lives. Clay is furious. He grabs Sam and insists they get married that very night, with Jack by their side as his Best Man.

Shortly after the wedding, Clay’s beeper goes off. This can only mean one thing - they've found Clay a matching heart donor. Clay gets to the hospital an is rushed into surgery. During the operation Clay experiences “anesthetic awareness,” where a surgery patient can feel everything being done to him, but cannot move or speak. Clay can feel everything Jack and his team does to his body and believes he is suspended in a nightmare. He hears conversation that don’t belong and begins to learn that everyone is not who they seem. Clay begins to realize that he was never meant to wake up from this operation.

Click here to buy this DVD for £11.98 (RRP: £19.99)

To celebrate the release of Happy-Go-Lucky on DVD, we have three copies up for grabs for www.sci-fi-online.com readers.

Sally Hawkins (Little Britain, Vera Drake, Tipping the Velvet) stars as Poppy, a consistently cheerful primary school teacher, who doesn’t let anyone or anything get her down. A free spirit, she is open and generous - as funny and anarchic as she is focused and responsible.

Happy-Go-Lucky is set in contemporary London and follows Poppy’s adventures as she goes about her daily life, living with her flatmate Zoe (Alexis Zegerman). A friend to many and an eternal fun-lover, Poppy is one of life’s sunny and relaxed characters - for example, when her bicycle is stolen, she simply regrets that she didn’t get the chance to say ‘goodbye’ to it.

The incident prompts her to learn to drive, and Poppy starts trying to spread some sunshine over her new driving instructor, Scott, played by Eddie Marsan (Vera Drake, The Illusionist). He’s having none of it, though - the grumpy, aggressive neurotic Scott is the complete antithesis of Poppy, and their relationship provides lashings of laughs.

The movie sees Poppy confronting some of life’s harshest realities and dealing with them head-on, while never losing her wonderful sense of humour. Life-affirming, fresh and funny, Happy-Go-Lucky won a Silver Bear Award for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Bastian, a lonely schoolboy, alienated from his father and bullied by his classmates, retreats to an attic where he becomes engrossed in a book entitled "The Neverending Story." It is the tale of a magical kingdom named, appropriately, Fantasia, since it is a world born of human fantasies.

Fantasia is being destroyed by great storms of Nothingness as mankind loses faith in the powers of imagination and fantasies die.

Dangerously ill herself, Fantasia's youthful empress sends a handsome warrior on a quest to find a cure for both her and her kingdom. After encounters with flying dragons, swamp monsters and a vast assortment of other fantastic creatures, the young hero discovers that only a human boy can save Fantasia, at which point Bastian is drawn, literally, into the pages of the story.

Naked - DVD

packshot

Naked is available to buy on DVD from Thin Man Films and Spirit Entertainment from 18 August 2008.

Click here to buy this DVD for £12.00 (RRP: £15.99)

To celebrate the release of Naked on DVD, we have three copies up for grabs for www.sci-fi-online.com readers.

Originally released in 1993, Naked is regarded by many as Mike Leigh’s masterpiece. Daring and abrasive, the film follows the eloquent and anarchic Johnny (David Thewlis) on his dark journey through a corrosive world. Rejecting all those who would care for him, the volcanic Johnny hurls himself into a nocturnal journey through London, colliding with the desperate and the dispossessed.

A profound and often shocking film, it bursts with ideas and contradictions, and is filtered with love, sex and black humour. With a virtuoso script and sensational performances from Thewlis and co-stars Katrin Cartlidge and Lesley Sharp, Naked was the winner of the Best Director and Best Actor prizes at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival.

The DVD comes complete with an audio commentary by Mike Leigh, David Thewlis and Katrin Cartlidge.

Always creating his own original screenplays by working in a unique way with his actors, Leigh has earned world-wide critical acclaim for his acutely observed work. While his movies challenge the audience to ask questions and to reflect, they never fail to be moving, funny and highly entertaining.

Notis is a darkly comic story of suburban America gone haywire. Five girls have already been found dismembered, and the police are no closer to figuring out who did it than they were after the first.

In the midst of this killing rampage, Riley Lawson (Ashley Johnson), goes missing. When her desperate parents, Will and Kate (Daniel Stern and Illeana Douglas), are contacted by her kidnapper, a useless and ineffectual FBI Special Agent (Jere Burns) takes charge of the case.

However, from deep within the psychopathic subterranean world created by her abductor Otis (Bostin Christopher), Riley turns the tables on her tormentor, manages to escape, and to contact her parents.

Meanwhile, fed up with the inability of the FBI to find the abductor, Will, Kate and Riley’s brother, Reed (Jared Kusnitz), decide to take matters - and justice - into their own hands. However, when Otis’ brother, Elmo (Kevin Pollack), shows up unexpectedly, the Lawsons find themselves mired in one of the more unusual and macabre consequences of vigilantism.

The legendary story of the intergalactic struggle between good vs. evil gets a unique make-over in Robot Chicken: Star Wars with full endorsement from Lucasfilm.

The episode brazenly combines the satirical touch of the show’s creators Seth Green (Austin Powers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Matthew Senreich's Robot Chicken, with the unforgettable moments and favourite characters of the Star Wars universe - among them, the creator himself, George Lucas is transformed into a stop-motion animated character which he also voiced.

In addition to having the Star Wars creator George Lucas himself voice his stopmotion animated likeness for the special, other noteworthy voice actors include Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Breckin Meyer, Malcolm McDowell, Donald Faison, Hulk Hogan and James Van Der Beek.

In this extended show, The Galaxy takes on an entirely different attitude as we see Emperor Palpatine receive a reverse charge call from the Dark Lord announcing the destruction of the Death Star, watch the droids have trouble getting through airport security and see Admiral Akbar selling out in an advert for his own breakfast cereal. George Lucas gets saved from a mob of nerds at a Star Wars convention, Luke and the Emperor settle things with a “yo mama” fight and there’s even a new unforgettable addition to the Star Wars franchise with “Empire on Ice”. And that’s just a snippet of the 35 sketches featured in this special episode of Robot Chicken.

Despite the evidence, Interpol Inspector Zenigata remains unconvinced and soon discovers that Lupin is actually alive and well and back to his old tricks. Along with his partners in crime, Daisuke Jigen and Goemon Ishikawa, Lupin has set off to the pyramids of Egypt in search of a mythical precious gem, the Philosopher's Stone and Zenigata is in hot pursuit.

Based on the comic books by Buichi Terasawa, the classic anime feature from the creators of Astro Boy, Lupin The Third and Golgo 13, the swashbuckling intergalactic fantasy Space Adventure Cobra blasts onto DVD for the first time ever.

A distant galaxy in a distant future... Three identical triplets, Jane, Dominique and Catherine, are the only survivors of a dead civilization they were born to rule. To revive their planet, the three sisters must find and unite with the one man they all love and return home.

In the meantime, Jane has taken up employment as a bounty hunter and is seeking the most notorious space pirate in the known universe, Cobra, the only person ever to have escaped the wrath of the Mafia Guild and its powerful leader, Crystal Boy.

When Cobra and Jane accidentally bump into each other in a bar, romantic sparks immediately begin to fly and Jane quickly forgets about the price on Cobra's head, choosing instead to enlist him in rescuing her sister, Dominique, who has been kidnapped by Crystal Boy.

Unknown to the pair, however, Dominique isn't quite ready to be rescued. In fact, she's become quite taken by her captor in more ways than one. Never a guy to turn an attractive woman (or three!) down, and with his own score to settle with Crystal Boy, Cobra is more than happy to lend a helping hand - it just so happens to be a hand armed with an awesome mental-energy blaster called a Psycho-gun.

As Cobra learns more about Crystal Boy's nefarious plans to rule the universe, not to mention the truth about his new squeeze and her sisters, he quickly realises that the future of the galaxy lies in his more than capable hands.

Brilliant young Doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) shocks his colleagues at the London Hospital when he unveils a man so hideously deformed that he is condemned to life as a freak in a circus sideshow.

Upon returning this unfortunate to his “owner” Bytes, Treves witnesses Bytes’ brutal treatment of the Elephant Man - whose real name is John Merrick - and decides to rescue him for medical study at hospital.

As he grows to know Merrick (John Hurt) however, he comes to realise that underneath the grotesque exterior there exists a gentle and intelligent man, whose capabilities have never been appreciated or allowed to develop.

After years of suffering abuse and ridicule, Merrick sweetly delights in this chance at a better life, but will fate and those who seek only to profit from his deformity conspire against him?
