Troi lends a hand
(17/01/03)

Dear Johnny Fanboy,

While watching the latest Star Trek movie Nemesis, I couldn't help asking myself why, when Troi probes the mind of the Viceroy to help Picard locate Shinzon's cloaked ship, does she need to place her hand over Worf's?

The scene is supposed to have Troi relaying the target's co-ordinates to Worf by pressing his fingers on to the control panel, but wouldn't it have been easier for her to have just done this herself? I know this scene also gives off a little sexual tension, since Worf and Troi were once lovers, but in all other respects it makes no sense.

And you can't claim that Worf's hands need to be there to guide her, because all she does is overlay her hand on his and then press his fingers down with hers.

Yours,

Toby Merton

Johnny Fanboy replies:

Maybe there's a Starfleet regulation requiring that only the assigned tactical officer - in this instance, Mr pasty-head himself - may operate the weapons targeting systems at any one time, unless he or she is incapacitated.

Or perhaps Troi is just a really lousy shot, and Worf doesn't trust her to operate the weapons without him there to override any mistakes!
