The icing on the gate
(26/08/03)

Dear Johnny Fanboy,

The first few times that the Stargate is used in the movie and TV series of the same name, the people travelling through it get thrown out of the other end. They are also covered with ice when they emerge on the other side.

The producers of the TV series very quickly seemed to forget about these side effects. Have you got an answer for this inconsistency?

Charles Condron

Johnny Fanboy replies:

I think those early glitches are due to imperfections in the computer control of the Stargate, in the absence of an authentic Dial Home Device. Remember that Apophis and his troops walk casually through Earth's Stargate at the start of Children of the Gods. I reckon the reason why they experience none of the aforementioned problems is because they had used a DHD on the other side.

Every time the SGC sent a team through the Stargate during those early days, they would have been able to refine their computer control. Soon the previous unpleasant side effects were eliminated - barring the occasional mishap.

One such mishap occurs when Samantha Carter overrides the Stargate's safety protocols so that the wormhole can pass through a sun in the episode Red Sky. The travellers get thrown out of the other end on that occasion too, again due to dodgy computer control.
