| Dear
Johnny Fanboy,
In the recent Stargate SG-1 two-parter Heroes,
can you explain what is going on with the plant life on the
planet visited?
In Part One, an SG team arrive on a planet and it is the middle
of summer. The trees are in full bloom. However in Part Two,
when the team is under attack on the planet, we see wounded
soldiers on the ground and it seems to be autumn. There are
brown leaves all over the place and the trees are bare.
What
is going on?
Yours,
William

Fanboy replies:
In
science fiction, we have witnessed many and various life cycles
on strange alien worlds. For example, seasons on the planet
Solos in the Doctor Who serial The Mutants last
for hundreds of years, whereas the world of Priplanus in Lost
in Space moves from arctic winter to blistering summer
in a matter of hours.
Even
though the plant life on P3X-666 in Heroes very likely
originated on Earth, I would suggest that it has adapted or
been modified to suit the planet's alien orbital path so that
seasonal changes take place over mere hours or days, rather
than months.
