30/04/10 - King's Dark Tower to become a film

news pic Yet another Stephen King creation is due to be turned into a full length feature film, as Weed Road and Imagine Entertainment are in the process of buying the rights to King's seven-book fantasy series The Dark Tower.

The books are set in an alternate world that is very much like the American Old West and focuses on the last member of an ancient order of gunslingers and his quest toward a tower that's also the centre of all universes.

Originally J.J. Abrams's Bad Robot production company, was planning to make a feature based on the series, but nothing ever materialised.

 

29/04/10 - Captain America starts filming in June

news pic According to trade paper Production Weekly, principal photography on Captain America: The First Avenger will commence on 28 June.

The production offices for the movie, which will be directed by Joe Johnston, have already opened at Shepperton Studios in Surrey.

The film will tell the origin story of how Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) becomes the title character after taking part in a Super Soldier experiment.

Captain America: The First Avenger is due to open in cinemas on 22 July 2011.

 

28/04/10 - Clash of the Titans sequel in the works

news pic The Deadline website is reporting that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are planning a sequel to Clash of the Titans, but that Louis Leterrier will not be returning as director.

Sam Worthington, and every character who survived, have already agreed to return for the sequel.

Warner Bros. is currently scouting for a director to get the project into production as quickly as possible - with a release expected as early as spring 2012.

 

27/04/10 - Chances are aliens won't be friendly

news pic Steven Spielberg may have to rethink his views on alien life forms visiting earth, if Professor Stephen Hawking's current theory is correct.

In Hawking's new Discovery Channel series Into the Universe, the theoretical physicist suggests that rather than seeking out alien life forms, we should be hiding from them - at least until we've evolved to be able to defend ourselves against what's likely to be a more highly advanced species.

"We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet," said Hawking. "I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach.

"If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn't turn out very well for the Native Americans."

 

26/04/10 - Proposed Ant-Man film still crawls on

news pic In a recent interview with MovieWeb Kevin Fiege, Marvel Studios's President of Production, confirmed that the long rumoured Ant-Man movie is still moving forward.

Created in the '60s by comic book legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Dr. Henry Pym was a scientist who created a way to reduce his size and become the hero Ant-Man. He would also wear a helmet that could control ants and was a long time member of The Avengers.

When asked if the movie was still in production and if Edgar Wright was still onboard to direct, Fiege said: "It is. Edgar was in town last week as he is finishing up Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. We've started to look at the Marvel calendar, Edgar's calendar and find a slot for them to match up. Once he gets Scott Pilgrim vs. The World out and finishes his promotional responsibilities we're going to have him come in and get a prep-calendar going."

Ant-Man is due to open in cinemas in 2011.

 

23/04/10 - Ridley Scott talks about Alien prequel

news pic In a recent interview with MTV director Ridley Scott [pictured] revealed more about his upcoming untitled Alien prequel.

"As we speak, I've got a pile of pages next to me; it's like the fourth draft," said Scott. "It's a work in progress, but we're not dreaming it up anymore. We know what the story is. We're now actually trying to improve the three acts and make the characters better, build it up to something [we can shoot]. It's a work in progress, but we're actually making the film. There's no question about it, we're going to make the film.

"It's set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver's character Ellen Ripley is born]. It's fundamentally about going out to find out 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?' The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle - there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer's chair. Remember that?

"We're hoping to have it in theaters in late 2011, or maybe the best date in 2012."

 

22/04/10 - Original Men in Black actors are back

news pic According to a news report on the Showbiz 411 website, both Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have finally confirmed their involvement in another Men in Black movie.

A script is currently being written and it's planned that the movie will be released in 3-D.

Director Barry Sonnenfeld told the site that Men in Black 3-D is ready to roll. As of yet no details of the plot have been revealed, nor has a production date been set.

 

21/04/10 - Is Downey Jr. all set to travel to Oz?

news pic The Playlist website is reporting that Robert Downey Jr. [pictured] is up for the role of the Wizard of Oz in Sam Mendes's Oz the Great and Powerful.

The film, which previously went under the working title of Oz,is a prequel to 1939's The Wizard of Oz.

The movie is one of two proposed Oz-themed movies in the works and It's unclear as to when this film will start production. Downey's currently committed to a second Sherlock Holmes as well as Joss Whedon's The Avengers. In addition Mendes was all geared up to direct the 23rd James Bond movie, but that is currently on hold as a result of MGM's current financial problems.

 

20/04/10 - Bond 23 put on hold indefinitely

news pic James Bond producers, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions, have suspended development on the next 007 film which was scheduled for release in 2011/2012.

In a press statement, put out jointly by Wilson and Broccoli, the pair said: "Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on Bond 23 indefinitely. We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of Bond 23."

James Bond 23 was in development with stars Daniel Craig and Judi Dench back to play Bond and M. The film was due to be directed by Sam Mendes.

 

19/04/10 - Mighty Mouse movie in the works

news pic The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Paramount's next superhero movie after Iron Man 2 will be a reboot of the TV cartoon Mighty Mouse.

The project, based on the vintage cartoon about a crime-fighting super-mouse has been in development for several years at Paramount and its Nickelodeon Movies label. But the studio has, over the last few months, been seeking both a new writer and a new director, with a number of up-and-comers on the list.

 

16/04/10 - Davis wants to resurrect Beetlejuice

news pic In a recent interview with the Moviehole website, actress Geena Davis [pictured] said she would be interested in starring in a sequel to Beetlejuice.

In the original 1988 movie, Davies played one-half of a deceased married couple. Alec Baldwin played her husband. "It's funny, [another journalist] just asked me about a sequel to Beetlejuice - which, though I haven't heard anything about it, might be interesting", Davis stated. "I would do that!"

She then pondered where the characters might go in another film. "Thing is, do ghosts age?", asks Davis. "Wouldn't we be stuck in the age we were? Alec [Baldwin] and I would have to look as we did then - who knows, maybe we could? I better get in touch with Tim Burton."

There have been a couple proposed sequels over the years. At one point there was a script titled Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian, that was written in the early 1990s. Nothing happened with that project. After that, Warner Premiere was interested in producing a sequel for the home-video market. That also never got off the ground.

 

15/04/10 - Han soap-o

14/04/10 - The buzz on Green Hornet is not good

news pic The IESB.net website has reported that sources inside Sony Pictures are not happy with the recently wrapped The Green Hornet movie. In fact, Sony executives are privately concerned that the movie is a disaster.

According to the website, issues the studio has with the film include the fact that the tone is too campy, they're not happy with the work from director Michel Gondry and Seth Rogen does not look the part at all.

The film is still due to be released in US cinemas from 22 December.

Update (16 April 2010): IndieWire spoke with Sony rep Steve Elzer who said: "The stuff that has been shown to us is remarkable. We fully support [Gondry] and are confident in the direction he is heading."

 

13/04/10 - Star Trek stage show opens in June

news pic A live Star Trek-themed stage show will open at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA in June.

Star Trek Live is a new interactive stage show which will take audiences on a 30-minute journey offering an unforgettable live theatrical experience for fans of all ages.

The show combines fun special effects, audience interaction and an exploration of real space-age technology. In the show, the audience portrays new Starfleet cadets assembled for the first day at the Starfleet Academy led by its best and brightest. The new cadets will have to learn quickly the intricacies of living and working in space, modern space travel and the latest in communication and technology.

 

12/04/10 - Is Logan Lerman the new Spider-Man?

news pic According to an Internet rumour on the HitFix website Logan Lerman [pictured], star of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, is currently Sony Pictures's first choice to replace Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker in the next Spider-Man movie.

A source close to the production has revealed that Lerman's involvement is "almost 100% locked" but that he's not in contract negotiations for the role yet.

Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) is to direct the new, as yet untitled Spider-Man movie which will be a more teen-friendly incarnation, taking Peter Parker back to his early days of balancing girl trouble, homework, and crime fighting.

The new film is expected to begin production later this year and will be in cinemas from 3 July 2012.

 

09/04/10 - Spielberg looks to the future

news pic The Discovery Channel and Steven Spielberg [pictured] are to join forces to produce an animated miniseries called Future Earth, according to trade paper Variety.

DreamWorks Animation is behind this project that looks at what life on the planet will be like in 25, 50 and 100 years.

Spielberg is set to personally oversee the development and in a statement said he was: "excited to be back in business with DreamWorks Animation."

The show will use futurists, scholars and other "great minds of today" to put together how health and medicine, technology, the environment, the military, the economy and the media evolve over time.

 

08/04/10 - Halo movie will happen... eventually

news pic Frank O'Connor, the franchise development director of 343 Industries which was set up by Microsoft to create new properties for the Halo series, has confirmed that a Halo film will happen.

A movie almost came into existence with Peter Jackson executive producing and Neill Blomkamp directing. But that eventually fell through.

"We're going to make a movie when the time is right," said O'Connor. "We own the intellectual property. If we want to make a movie, the scale of all the other stuff that we do changes dramatically. We make tens and tens of millions of dollars on ancillary stuff, toys, apparel, music and publishing. If we do a movie all of that will grow exponentially. We have some numbers if we do a movie, but it changes everything. It also changes our target and age demographic."

 

07/04/10 - J.K. Rowling may revisit Potter

news pic In a recent interview J.K. Rowling [pictured] revealed that while she doesn't intend to write any offshoots of the Potter series now, there is a chance she may revisit the boy wizard "maybe 10 years from now," depending on how she feels.

The Washington Post reported that she does want to write more books, though they won't be in the Potter universe.

Talking to the newspaper, Rowling said: "I'm quite sure in the not-too-distant future I will bring out another book."

 

06/04/10 - Star Wars animated comedy planned

news pic Lucasfilm Animation has revealed that it's developing a new animated Star Wars TV series on top of its The Clone Wars show. However, this one's going to be a comedy.

It's also rumoured that Seth Green and Matthew Seinreich [pictured], creators and executive producers of Robot Chicken, will have "creative involvement."

There's no start date or network for the comedy series yet, so we have no idea when we'll be able to start laughing at Star Wars. But will you be ready?

 

01/04/10 - No joshing, Whedon up for Avengers?

news pic The IESB website is reporting that Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dollhouse) is currently on the "short list" of directors to helm Marvel Comics's The Avengers.

Zak Penn (X:Men: The Last Stand) is currently writing The Avengers screenplay which will see Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and other heroes come together to form Marvel's first supergroup, The Avengers.

The movie is due to be released on 04 May 2012.
