When an ancient Red Indian medicine man is reincarnated in modern day New York intent on reclaiming his land from the white men the only two people who can stop him are a fake mystic, who has spent years swindling old ladies in order to earn a living, and a modern-day medicine man...

The Manitou was Graham Masterton's debut novel and was made into a film starring Tony Curtis and Susan Strasberg in the late seventies. This special Telos edition celebrates the 25th anniversary of this novel and is available in two editions; a limited edition, signed and numbered hardback and a paperback.

Both feature a new introduction by Graham Masterton, and the book's original ending which, after publication in the first hardback edition, was changed for all subsequent editions. The revised ending is also present. Both editions feature internal illustrations taken from pre-production drawings for the 1970s film which have never before seen publication. The paperback features two of these in full colour on the cover whilst the hardback features an additional colour section with 12 full colour illustrations and is limited to 100 copies, each signed by Masterton.

To be honest, being able to read both endings to the book, I must admit to be in favour of the original, shorter version. The ending which has replaced Masterton's original is a little on the crazy side with the spirit of a computer being called upon to help defeat the evil Red Indian spirit. In places this novel shows its age. There is one overtly racist sentence and the original story had the heroes question whether the white man had actually learned anything since he virtually wiped out the Indians.

A good solid read that doesn't disappoint. I strongly advice purchasing the deluxe edition - they are sure to become much sought after collector's items in the future.
