Ever five thousand years, so the people of Thanet believe, the world ends in fire and a new cycle of creation begins. Now the last days are once again upon them, and a fiery star draws near. This is the Death-Bringer, the Eater of the World, whose coming heralds the end of all things. But to Captain Picard and his crew the Death-Bringer is nothing more than a rogue comet, one which can easily be destroyed. But how can he save the Thanetians without destroying the basis of their whole civilisation?...

Do Comets Dream sound like another take on an overused narrative. But Somtow weaves an intricate tale around this well worn premise. Moral dilemma, religious beliefs and a world that is only backwards when it comes to the ancient beliefs that it allows to govern it's existence (Hey! Sounds like a species very dear to our hearts - us!)

There is another interesting twist as Troi realises that Picard doesn't have to contend with the dilemma of whether to save the Thanetians, while destroying everything they hold sacred, because the Comet is actually alive.

There is just (and only just) enough story here to keep you entertained for books 260+ pages without your mind wandering. A surprisingly new take on an old format.
