When Captain Calhoun of the U.S.S. Excalibur picked a fight with mysterious alien beings who claim to be the inspiration for the gods of ancient Earth his ship was badly damaged, and they only survived because of his wife Captain Shelby and the U.S.S. Trident. However after a brief respite his ship is as good as new, now it is time for round two and this time he will win. In search of revenge the Excalibur and Trident travel to the planet Danter however when they get there they are in for a big surprise. The former home of a vast galactic empire has changed beyond recognition. A world renown for violence has become docile and friendly, it all seems to good to be true, and it is...

A group of beings with godly powers have emerged with promises of perfect health and everlasting peace, all they want is to be worshipped. To stop them enslaving the galaxy The Trident and Excalibur must overcome an entire planet of individuals as well as these mysterious beings themselves.

This book is poor. Although it started off well, after the title it was all down hill. The actual story line is not bad, it is the stuff most good Star Trek episodes are made of, a seemingly insurmountable problem, a complex scientific solution and bravery to carry it through. The problem is the characters. By the end of the book I wished that the gods had triumphed and obliterated these pathetic people from ever existing. And I won't even mention the predictable unfunny one liners... Even when the characters look like they might have some depth the illusion is quickly dispelled.

The one moment in the book that finally took the biscuit was Captain Calhoun's big speech. I knew from everything that had happened previously that it would be pathetic. Even the addition of Spock cannot save this awful book.

My advice to all Star Trek fans, in fact anyone who can read, don't buy this book.
