In the wake of the Tholian attack that nearly cost him his life, Kyle Riker becomes the target of an apparent conspiracy within Starfleet Command, forcing him off Earth and beyond Federation territory to evade the attempts on his life. At the same time, the Starfleet career of Kyle's estranged son William Riker is under way in earnest, from his turbulent formative years at the Academy to his first perilous missions as an ensign aboard the Starship Pegasus. And even as Kyle searches for the truth behind the events that have made him a fugitive, Will is pursued as well - by a family legacy he fears he will never escape...

Deny Thy Father sees the release of another cracking novel in The Lost Era series of Trek books. This time around we get to delve into the back history of the turbulent relationship, or lack of, between William T. Riker and his father.

As with most good Trek novels, this is not a book about Trek, more an exploration into the human condition - what affect did Kyle's life have on his son? It's also interesting for anyone interested in mapping out William's days at the Academy. Although, it's a little scary to see how arrogant and self assured he is. Why doesn't he help his friend when he comes to him in his hour of need. Sure he may be a bit of a waster, but he is in the Academy and so must be good for something.

Nit-pickers amongst you will no doubt question why the son of such an outlaw was ever allowed to pursue such a high flying career in Starfleet, but worry not Jeff Mariotte has all the answers - it's also good to see him include the appearance of a young ensign known as Janeway.

Another entertaining addition to the series.
