Picard, at the start of his career in Star Fleet. But how
will the new captain take to the pressures of command? His
test comes in the form of White Wolf, a pirate who is leaving
a trail of havoc across several sectors of space. And to make
matters worse, Picard appears to have been set up to fail...
book comes with a pedigree - Friedman is not new to Trek
fiction - and as a result Gauntlet has the stamp of
a man who knows what he's writing about. Picard speaks with
a voice recognisable from the TV series but other characters,
like Valderrama, are often more silly names than personality.
The plot, which seems more pointlessly tangled than cleverly
complex, rolls along, padded out with some lumpy dialogue.
what do you know. White Wolf is actually some sort of scientist
that Picard has heard of. Which brings me to a general point:
is space really so small that you'll have visited or met somewhere/someone
known to someone else on the crew of your ship?
