The fifth anthology featuring original Star Trek stories
by Trek fans, for Trek fans, again features
stories set during the original series, The Next Generation,
Deep Space Nine and Voyager. This collection
of stories explore the past and future of Star Trek
from a number of different perspectives...
any publication has the words: "by fans, for fans"
emblazoned on the cover a little shiver goes down my spine.
These words can normally be supplemented by "by the obsessed
for those that will by anything with a Star Trek endorsement
on it." However,
the Strange New Worlds series seems to has already
warranted four volumes, so they must be doing something right.
story is less than 7500 words in length which makes this book
excellent to dip in and out of. The grand prize winner Mary
Scott-Wiecek's Disappearance on 21st Street is a well
deserved winner and would have fitted well as a general short-story,
the fact that it ties in to the Star Trek universe
is neither here nor there. And this is where the strength
in this collection is. We want great stories, first and foremost
and if they can be transferred to the Trek universe,
then even better.
biggest gripe is that there was only one Star Trek: Deep
Space Nine story in the collection. This is a little poor
when compared with Next Gen and Voyager which
both had seven stories printed and even Enterprise
managed three stories. As Deep Space Nine is by far
my favourite series I felt a little cheated.
aside this is an enjoyable, well above average compilation.
