Prepare for a voyage to the outer reaches of imagination. Whether it's stopping by Queerwater, Kansas, to see Jack B. Quick or visiting Promethea in Misty Magic Land, surfing the boundaries of the farthest dimensions with Tom Strong's daughter Tesla as she searches for her missing friend or just pouring over the sketches and drawings of your favourite ABC artists, this collection is a cornucopia of fantastic comics. Some might even say... America's best comics...

America's Best Comics is a strange beast. And I'm actually struggling to think who it is really aimed at. It tries to be wacky and off the wall - but fails more times than it succeeds. The Jack B. Quick stories, which are usually very funny, seem to be a little on the naff side in this collection. And the usually amusing Splash Brannigan barely manages to raise a smile in the feeble story generated here. In fact, the only really interesting addition in this collection is The First American.

By far my biggest complaint is that around a quarter of this collection is taken up with sketchbook illustrations of the characters in this volume. Now, a few pages I can stomach, but over 50 pages? I think a lot of readers will feel conned by this.

Not America's best comics at all. Avoid.
