Cold war paranoia has outlawed the mystery men of the golden age. Stalwarts such as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman continued to fight for truth and justice, but as the world hurtled towards an uncertain future, it would take a new breed of hero to define the American way...

DC: The New Frontier is a pretty entertaining offering. It charts the history of the end of the golden age of heroes to the beginnings of the formation of the Justice League of America (JLA) - Or, if you're not familiar with comic history: as the '50s gave way to the '60s.

What this collection does, it does well. A modern 21st century perspective on events in the mid-20th century may seem a bit of an odd subject for a graphic novel, but writer/illustrator Darwyn Cooke pulls this off with style. His artwork has a semi-retro feel to it, which sets this collection up in a league of its own.

The publishers have also done an impressive repro job giving this collection a quality feel to it.

If you are not a huge fan of the JLA, or American superheroes at large, then this will not be to your taste. But if you are, and you fancy a little twist, this is the collection you've been waiting for. Satisfying.
