The whole world knows that Superman fights for truth and justice... but why does he? What drives a farmboy from Kansas to divide his life between posing as a mild-mannered reporter and embarking on a career as a super-hero? This release tell the origin of the Man of Steel, incorporating his vast and colourful legend into a brand-new epic tale... a battle to save both the legacy of Krypton and the future of Metropolis...

Birthright is a daring project. Take one well known super-hero and reinvent his origins to bring him up to date for a 21st century audience - whilst at the same time staying true to his original origins and taking into account the vast array of work undertaken since the '60s.

What we are left with is a tougher, meaner and sexier Superman - one that certainly should appeal to the latest generation of comic readers, while still drawing in the old readers.

Author Mark Waid performs a fantastic job of getting down and dirty with the original story and reinventing for a more difficult to please audience. But it is Lenil Francis Yu and Gerry Alanguilan artwork that brings this book to life.

If you consider yourself a die-hard Superman fan then you should already own this. Possibly the most well conceived and beautifully brought to life creation I have witnessed in recent years. I defy anyone not to shed a tear at the closing pages!

Mark Waid is Superman.
