Pickpocket
Gaston 'The Mouse' (Matthew Broderick) escapes from certain
death in the dungeons of the castle Aquila by crawling down
a drain. But his flight to freedom soon looks to be short-lived
until the mysterious Navarre (Rutger Hauer) arrives and saves
him from a troop of guards sent to capture the fleeing petty
criminal. But Navarre is no normal man - by night he is a wolf.
And to make matter worse, his girlfriend, Isabeau (Michelle
Pfeiffer), spends her days as a hawk. It's an evil curse brought
down in judgement on the lovers by a jealous bishop. Fortunately,
Imperius (Leo McKern), a priest that acted for the bishop, has
figured out a cure, in the process redeeming himself of his
past wrongdoing...
Beware:
Ladyhawke has a soundtrack by Alan Parsons. an immediate
'minus 10' among the music-loving population. But the movie's
cast is strong, if not top notch, with all the principal actors
all acting to type: Broderick quips, Hauer broods, Pfeiffer
comes over all glacial and McKern shouts, so there's no disappointment
there.
The
settings and locations for Ladyhawke are first rate;
the direction, script and acting are, rather unfortunately,
second rate. It's not as if the film is actually bad - more
that it's just not very good. It's as if the production crew
forgot to add any substance to the project, relying instead
on style to carry the day.
The
5.1 audio remix, however, is first class, albeit spoilt by
some truly horrible music.
