Jack (Tom Cruise) is forced to rescue his dull but pretty girlfriend, Mina, from the lord of darkness, hammed to perfection by Tim Curry. He wants to break free from his dingy, and frankly rather shabby subterranean lair, but to do this he needs to kill a pair of unicorns. Cruise teams up with some Muppets, sorry, miniature creatures from the underworld, and sets out to save his girlfriend and defeat Curry's plan to take over the world...

Legend is a film that almost defies review. It is beautifully staged and designed. Its direction by Ridley Scott is often masterful and the soundtrack is faultless. It's just a shame about the plot - or lack of it.

Time passes slowly for the audience as nothing much happens for the first hour, albeit in style. And then when the action finally starts it's all over. The fairies and goblins forge an army, the unicorns and Mina are saved and Curry is banished forever. The end.

Fans of Legend claim that the film was murdered by the studio which had the film butchered and cut to just 90 minutes. But if that is the case it's not hard to see why the studio stepped in as Scott's vision is neither adult gothic or children's fantasy. It's all a bit of a (stylish) mess - neither fish nor fowl.

The disc's 5.1 audio remix is first rate and the transfer is sharp and clean but there's little else in the way of preparation for DVD. The sole real extra, the cinema trailer, looks as if it's been buffed up by a Brillo pad.
