Retired spymaster George Smiley is back looking for his Soviet arch-nemesis Karla - brought out of retirement by the British Secret Service to "tidy things up" once again. But it's not long before the intrigue, treachery and deception starts. Can Smiley find out who killed General Vladimir and even if he does, will it solve anything? And does anyone really care...

This sequel to the excellent BBC adaptation of John Le Carré's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is no less impressive, partly because of Alec Guinness' excellent portrayal of the mild-mannered Smiley - the spy master with the gentle touch and hard stare. Directed by Simon Langton and co-scripted by John Hopkins and Le Carré himself, the overall production oozes effortless quality.

A host of great European cities play host to the action while an A+ supporting cast turn in universally good performances - Michel Lonsdale, Vladek Sheybal, Michael Gough, Alan Rickman, Beryl Reid, Ingrid Pitt, Bernard Hepton, Michael Elphick, Bill Paterson and Maureen Lipman are all on top form. And Patrick Stewart as the elusive Karla is perfect in the role.

Fast-paced? No. Intelligent? Yes. Worth watching? Beyond doubt. Smiley's People is simply TV at its very best.
