Watch the works of one of the best-loved British authors come to life as the Royal Ballet dancers perform in this magical fusion of staged ballet and footage from the breathtaking English countryside. High jumping Jeremy Fisher springs into action and Squirrel Nutkin ignites the stage amidst a furore of scurrying mice and cunning pigs. Peter Rabbit is a mischievous as ever as he dances happily across the stage having just raided the cabbage patch and Jemima Puddleduck begets drama and suspense as she narrowly escapes the dastardly designs of the fox with a duck casserole recipe...

The Tales of Beatrix Potter was BAFTA Award nominated for its art direction and costume designs, and it is easy to see why. This is a well designed production. The costumes, music and performances are all first rate. However, it's a little difficult to see who this is aimed at.

Those who grew up on Beatrix Potter's stories, and fondly remember the tales of Peter Rabbit and Squirrel Nutkin, are unlikely to find that this production captures the spirit of the books. Equally, those who enjoy ballet will find this too lightweight and bitty.

Not only that, but this production has been on television so many times, that I doubt many people are going to be that interested in owning it on DVD - especially as there are no extras of any description included. If a few interviews (maybe one with Wayne Sleep who performed a number of the characters) and an audio commentary had been included, then we could have received some sort of background information on this production. As it stands this is simply not worth the money.

Again, as I mentioned earlier, the costumes really are spectacular, as is the music, but I doubt whether this will appeal to today's younger generation.
