Newlyweds George and Kathy Lutz move into house where a murder was committed. Shortly after settling in, things begin to go pear-shaped...

Ah, The Amityville Horror. Some people think it is based on a true story. Honestly, they do. Anyhow, made in 1979 this classic horror film still impresses. Granted, the scare factor is nowhere near as high as something like The Grudge (original and remake), but by the film's climax all the right buttons have been pushed and it's time to start shouting at the TV screen. Even the special effects have stood the test of time, including one extremely weird moment involving an animal normally found on the farm.

After the shock opening (tame by today's standards), the film takes its time getting the pace back up. To begin with, James Brolin as George Lutz comes across as rather bland, but eventually goes on to prove that he does insane very well. Margot Kidder as Kathy Lutz does her best with a somewhat under-written character, but credit goes to Rod Steiger as Father Delaney. His passionate desire to save the family and rid the world of evil keeps the viewer interested until the really weird stuff starts.

All in all, this is a must-have for fans of horror, especially now the film has been released as a Special Edition. Yes, extras and Dolby 5.1! The extras disc also contains a sneak preview of the remake. That's right, a remake is on the way. It had better be good.
