Something sinister lurks in the depths of planet Tallon IV. Interstellar bounty hunter Samus Aran is the only one who can destroy this evil. But first it must be found...

Metroid Prime is the first Metroid game for the GameCube, but the fourth in the series. The graphics are a vast improvement on previous instalments - try squashing a bug at close quarters and watch as you are covered in its innards. The attention to detail on Samus's visor is also impressive (it mists up, ices up and, as mentioned before, gets covered in goo depending on the conditions).

It's not an easy game - so novice gamers might be better advised to beef up on their gameplay first on games like Halo. But, once you get used to the gameplay, it becomes fairly simple to get to grips with.

The biggest sore point is getting used to the controls - they are a pain to begin with. But, it's worth persevering with because once mastered you'll soon see what everyone is raving about. And the music and sound effects could have been a lot better - the music is pretty weak to be honest.

But it is the number of upgrade weapons, the gaming area and the overall feel of the game that make this a winner.

One of the best GameCube games available - Metroid fans will not be disappointed.
