The music of Barry Gray was an integral element of the shows
of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson - and no less so than here in
Captain Scarlet Vs The Mysterons - so it's good to
see yet another fine release from Silva Screen of the great
man's work. As with the previous Thunderbirds disc
this CD is a lovingly restored, well-annotated item of pure
pleasure for fans of Supermarionation and at well over an
hour running time it also represents great value for money.
tracks are pretty much in chronological order although it's
odd that there's nothing from the first episode aside from
the opening and closing credits. Does this hint at a Volume
2? Let's hope so. There's certainly enough left over material
to justify a second roundup of music cues from Captain
Scarlet as there is with Thunderbirds.
of the most interesting things about the music is how Gray
tries to distance himself from his previous work by abandoning
the use of strings for the early episodes. This helps create
some harsher tones more in keeping with the shows militaristic
themes, although Barry clearly couldn't help himself and there
are also some typically lush string arrangements to be found
further into the CD.
overall quality of the restoration combined with the quality
of the compositions themselves ensures that this CD will appeal
to fans of Captain Scarlet as well as lovers of good
TV and film music everywhere. If only every record label took
as much care as Silva Screen.
